A hidden gem, Mountainside Borough is located on 4.1 square miles of land that was set aside many years ago by the Lenni Lenape Indians as hunting grounds. Built on the side of the Watchung Mountains, Mountainside is a small picturesque community featuring an abundance of trees and hilly terrain that bear witness to it’s name. Mountainside’s growth since WWII has taken the form of single family homes on streets which wind up the mountain, giving many houses a view across New Jersey to the NYC Skyline. There is also a great deal of open space as a part of the Union County Park System (Echo Lake Park and the Watchung Reservation). The small commercial center includes excellent restaurants, a gourmet food market, salons, a florist, bakery, deli and banks.

Commuting

You have a lot of options when commuting from Mountainside. The NJ Transit buses 114, 114x and 117 run through Mountainside by way of Rt. 22. There is a sheltered stop in front of the Town Hall (Rt. 22 and New Providence Rd.) with reserved parking available. There is also a stop at Mountain Ave and Rt. 22 in Springfield. The Lakeland Bus is another popular option for direct service to NY Port Authority from their convenient Park and Ride location on Broad St in Summit.

Both the Summit and Westfield train stations are within a few minute drive. Summit Train Station offers Mid Town Direct service to NY Penn Station (35 minutes!) and non-resident parking options.

By car, Routes 22, 24, 287, 78 , the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway are all easily accessible. The Newark Liberty International Airport is about a 20 minute drive.

Schools

The Mountainside school district is comprised of Beechwood School (PreK-2), Deerfield School (3-8) and Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights (9-12). Governor Livingston Ranked #54 best public high school in NJ for 2017 on Niche schools. For information on buses call (908) 232-3232. There is also a Inter –Parochial School at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Mountainside (K-8) which is run by Holy Trinity in Westfield.
